Starting my own writing and content strategy business

After years of contracting, a dash of freelance work here and there and the last eighteen months gainfully employed, I have finally launched my own writing, editing, and content strategy business, working primarily with non-profits, small businesses, and independent consultants.

At the heart of my work is writing and editing. I help clients develop content that communicates clearly and consistently, so, for example, donors trust a non-profit’s report enough to keep giving, and customers and clients trust a small business’s or consultant’s expertise enough to buy a product or pay for a service. Alongside that, I also offer content and comms strategy for clients who want to think more broadly about how they show up, looking at their messaging and how it fits together across everything they put out.

Starting a new venture on my own is nerve-wracking, especially with no team to fall back on, no established process to lean into, and no well-timed contract gig to rely on for short-term income. It’s just me, the work and the decision to back myself to do it well.

I don’t expect my nervousness to disappear overnight. But what’s ahead excites me, mainly because this business combines two things I care about: my love of writing, which has been with me for years, and the comms experience I’ve built working across higher education, not-for-profit, finance, and real estate. Both have shaped how I think about content, in terms of what sounds good and also lands well with the people reading it.

That love of writing and the comms experience I’ve gathered across different sectors have also shaped the service I offer. I know for some, writing content, let alone having the time to think about it, can often feel like the last item on a very long to-do list. I want to take that off your plate by working closely with you to understand what you’re trying to say and who you’re trying to reach, so you can create and write content that amplifies your business and/or service proposition.

If that sounds like you, feel free to reach out to book a discovery call.
